ENGL 1010 Intro to Writing

 Writer's Introduction

This issue exploration assignment helped me to understand that there is more to a debate than just two sides. I never really thought about how someone’s point of view fits in with the larger conversation or how another’s perspective can affect your own. Before starting my research I thought I knew what I thought about smoking bans. I thought there was nothing negative about them and that the bans were only showing positive results for everyone, now I know that this assumption is not true and there is always someone that isn’t pleased.

At first it was very difficult for me to just start the assignment. Coming up with a list of topics that I was interested in but that could also be made into a question of a larger conversation was really hard for me. I found one topic that I really liked but then realized that not enough opinions were on it. My topic that I ended up with was a last resort, but in the end I really enjoyed learning about smoking bans. I spent a lot of time writing my issue summary, when I first wrote my conclusion the only thing I could come up with was my sentence that said “there are lots of opinions about smoking bans affecting individuals in both positive and negative ways, but the effects are there whether you believe they are beneficial or not.” This sentence obviously isn’t enough for a conclusion, but it was the only thing I could come up with for a long time.

Not only did I learn a lot about writing through this assignment, but I learned lots of new things in the class. Before English 1010 I did not know that there was a thing called “rhetorical appeals” yet alone how important they are in your writing or just to understand as a reader. In high school my worst subject was English, not because of vocabulary or the reading assignments, but because I was a horrible writer. When it came down to writing a research paper or a reflective writing my teachers always hated it, but now I realize that maybe I could’ve gotten better grades on my papers if I would’ve taken the time to do more revising or adding more analyzing into my paper.
